PCs with a built-in fingerprint sensor: statistics
PCs avec un capteur d'empreinte digitale intégré: statistiques
Here are some statistics about notebooks and desktops with a built-in fingerprint sensor. I count only the new designs released within one year because there are too many updates, and sometimes released under different brand names.
I stopped the statistics end of 2010. Too much devices...
New notebook & desktop designs evolution
I define a "new notebook design" when a new casing is done. When it is the same casing, I consider that there is nothing new and do not count it as a new design, which frequently happens when this is a simple processor upgrade for instance.
The first years are not very significant as there were only some prototypes. The last year is not finished, and so is not significant as well. 2005 was the "year" when biometrics really started in notebooks.
We can clearly see that area fingerprint sensors have been totally replaced by swipe sensors, mainly because of their lower cost. The very first prototype was made by myself in 1998, and it was a swipe sensor!
Notebook & desktop manufacturers with new designs
This is the number of notebook & desktop manufacturers that releases a new design during the calendar year.
It shows that most notebook makers have now at least one design with an built-in fingerprint sensor, and some of them are now releasing several models per year. First desktops appeared in 2007.
